This project is a good example of how to challenge a designer’s understanding
of integrating interior space with surroundings. Situated at primary location
facing the Taichung Opera House, Toyo Ito’s signature design, so the design
of this residence took the organic curve as a design element and introduced a
curving wall to dialogue with the outdoor beauty of the Opera Hall.
The program for this residence is more open than restricted in meeting its basic
functional needs. This is a place for a couple and two children, who currently
study abroad. The public zone is the central focus of the design in this project.
Beauty, in and out
The layout has a precise border between the public and private zones. The
public is a place for daily activities to be fully joined. It consists of a living room,
view wonderment zone, reading space, and dining zone. The entry has a path
linking to the two children bedrooms. Divided behind a marble screen is the
public zone, and the screen extends its curving formation to guide the view to
the living room and ends at the window. Joined with the ample living space the

dining room is visually dominated by a central island table which plays a role
both for domestic needs and social gatherings. The cooking space is hidden behind a colored secret door.
The whole public quarter reveals a bright spirit dominated by furnishing elements in gray color tone; mineral paint covers
the wall and gray color slates display the natural texture on the surface of the floor. Fine finishes with round edges appear

everywhere in the space and lighting is hidden behind walls or ceiling layers to create intimate comfort. The living room has a
round pattern fully paved in marble, which provides a direct visual link to the marble screen situated between lobby and main
public zone.
